چکیده

In a continuing evaluation of the ERS-1 C-band scatterometer as a tool for studying polar sea ice, we evaluate the azimuthal modulation characteristics of Antarctic sea ice. ERS-1 AMI scatterometer mode data sets from several study regions dispersed in the Antarctic seasonal sea ice pack are evaluated for azimuthal modulation. When appropriate, the incidence angle dependence is estimated and removed in a study region before determining whether azimuthal modulation is present in the data. Other comparisons are made using the fore and aft beam measurement difference. Our results show that over the ice pack, azimuthal modulation is less than 1 dB at the scale of observation of the ERS-1 C-band scatterometer.

Azimuthal Modulation of Ku-Band Scatterometer Sigma-0 Over the Antarctic

The azimuthal modulation characteristics of Antarctic sea ice are evaluated using techniques developed by David S. Early for the ERS-1 AMI scatterometer. Azimuthal modulation can produce adverse a ects in a number of applications including resolution enhancement through image reconstruction techniques. Several regions of sea ice and glacial ice are selected for the experiment. Incidence angle d...

Ice Classification in the Southern Ocean Using ERS-1 Scatterometer Data

Class 1CE MY Abstract A simple method for classifying Southern Ocean sea ice from enhanced resolution ERS-1 scatterometer images is presented. The enhanced resolution images are created with the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (SIR) algorithm. This algorithm uses a dense, irregular sample grid created with multiple, overlapping passes of the ERS-1 scatterometer t o achieve resolutions better...

Satellite Microwave Radar Observations of Antarctic Sea Ice

Since 1991, the European Space Agency’s two ERS satellites have acquired microwave radar data of Antarctica. ERS data have been recorded by two receiving stations, one German, one Japanese. The former has allowed direct downlink and recording of high bit-rate, high resolution SAR image data of the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas during station campaigns. The latter has enabled some data from th...

Sea ice extent mapping using Ku band scatterometer data

Although spaceborne scatterometers such as the NASA scatterometer have inherently low spatial resolution, resolution enhancement techniques can be used to increase the utility of scatterometer data in monitoring sea-ice extent in the polar regions, a key parameter in the global climate. The resolution enhancement algorithm produces images of A and B, where A is the normalized radar backscatter ...

Azimuth variation in microwave scatterometer and radiometer data over Antarctica

While designed for ocean observation, scatterometer and radiometer data have proven very useful in a variety of cryosphere studies. Over large regions of Antarctica, ice sheet and bedrock topography and the snow deposition, drift, and erosional environment combine to produce roughness on various scales. Roughness ranges from broad, basin scale ice-sheet topography at 100 km wavelengths, to larg...
